SHRINX lounge chair

The future of soft seating.

A classic lounge chair typically gets its soft shape and comfort from large amounts of polyurethane foam. The SHRINX Lounge Chair explores a different way to create the same experience. A specially developed textile is loosely fitted around a steel frame and shrinks into place when heated. The tensioned textile helps create the chair’s shape, flexibility, and comfort while reducing the need for traditional foam upholstery. The result is a spacious, comfortable lounge chair that is lighter and more visually open than the classic club chair.

Polyurethane foam, which is made of plastic, is a central part of traditional upholstery, but SHRINX shows that soft lounge furniture can be constructed differently. Its lightweight construction also makes the chair easier to move and transport; at the same time, the open expression suits public spaces where both privacy and connection to the surroundings are important. The project applies a textile technology previously used mainly on smaller surfaces in office chairs to a full-size lounge chair, pointing to new possibilities for the future of upholstered furniture.
