ReCraft – Reclaiming building materials

Turning demolition into design.

Brick, concrete, and stone from demolition sites do not have to end up as crushed fill material. ReCraft transforms them into new panels and surfaces for interior walls, floors, and facades. The materials are cut, shaped, and finished so that even irregular fragments can be used as consistent building components. Their form and dimensions are guided by the materials available rather than forcing them into a predetermined shape. At the same time, traces, colors, and textures from the materials’ previous lives remain visible as a part of the new expression.

The construction industry is one of the most resource- and climate-intensive industries that also generates large amounts of waste through renovation and demolition. ReCraft addresses both challenges by using materials that already exist locally. Instead of crushing brick, concrete, and stone into lower-value products, the materials are processed and brought back into construction as new surfaces. This preserves both their material character and part of the history of the buildings they came from. ReCraft shows that demolition materials do not have to end up at the bottom of the value chain, but can return as attractive and practical building materials.
