Biology as a building material.

Rebound has developed a prototype for acoustic panels made from mycelium, the root network of fungi, and a waste biomass such as straw. Instead of using traditional energy-intensive manufacturing, the material is grown through a low-temperature biological process where the mycelium acts as a natural glue. The growth process can also be controlled to create different textures and natural colors without the need to add synthetic paint.

The construction industry is one of the world's most resource- and emissions-intensive industries. With many building materials still relying on energy-intensive production and non-renewable raw materials, Rebound Acoustic Ceiling demonstrates how biological growth can replace parts of traditional production methods without compromising key functional properties. The panels use renewable residual resources, can store CO2, and can be recycled as raw material for new products. The acoustic ceiling also serves as a first step towards a broader platform for mycelium-based building materials, potentially including insulation and building panels in the future.
