REPLATED is a research-based upcycling project that explores the possibilities within ceramics and ceramic glazes. The project breathes new life into discarded, functional, industrially produced porcelain plates.
Birgit Marie collects the plates second-hand, bringing them to her ceramic studio, where she fires them once to give them a fresh aesthetic. She has developed a line of ceramic glazes using industrial byproducts or naturally sourced materials, including recycled glass and materials from Denmark’s subsurface, like clay and granite.
The colors and textures of these materials are enhanced with few traditional glaze elements. Replating the old, anonymous plates with her glazes is like a jeweler gold-plating a silver ring – transforming their surface, perception, and value. The plates evolved from a ‘no-design’ object to one enriched with craft and ceramic quality.
Birgit Marie’s methods stem from curiosity and a desire to create better solutions for future consumers. Through REPLATED, she aims to spark conversations about the materials we use, the products we discard, and the role of crafts in 2024.
