REBUS stands for Renovating Buildings Sustainably. There are 12.5m square metres of social housing in Denmark that were built in the 60s and 70s which are low on energy efficiency. REBUS is a system to renovate these buildings quickly, at scale and with minimum disruption and maximum involvement for residents. The Jury says Although this might not look visionary, actually it is because being able to renovate large quantities of housing quickly and cost effectively to meet climate targets is not easy. REBUS have provided a vision of how this can be achieved. Various types of panelling are produced in factories, but there is variety for resident associations to choose from. Industrializing refurbishment through system-based production is a visionary concept that could actually work. Renovation is needed, and REBUS points out that this can be done without tearing buildings down.
