Mathilde Bess addresses a difficult topic in her focus on bodies that lie outside the mainstream perception framed by a fleeting fashion perspective. Rather than covering up the bodies and identities that do not live up to the prevailing norms and trying to make them appear conventional, she gives them new meaning. Her staged haute couture presentations are provoking and spark debate and may be seen as an extension of the important genre of critical design.
